Welcome to another weekly wrapup! This week we spoke about the short lived gold rush in Uttar Pradesh, India-US trade relationship, why Japan may be sliding into a recession, the search for safe havens, and the much awaited SBI Cards IPO.
So let's get started.
Why the Gold Discovery claim in Sonbhadra was always suspect?
On Monday, we spoke about the massive gold rush in Uttar Pradesh that lasted about 24 hours all in all.
So last Friday, a district mining officer from Sonbhadra claimed that state officials had discovered close to 3,000 tonnes of gold reserves close by. However, the claim was refuted the very next day by the Geological Survey of India. Turns out, there was only about 160 kgs of recoverable gold on the site.
But this got us thinking- What's the likelihood of someone stumbling upon a gold reserve that big? You can read our take on the matter here.
"Make in India" Vs. "America First"
On Tuesday, we discussed the possibility of a trade deal between the U.S. and India. Trade relations between the two countries have been on the rocks for a while now. Donald Trump believes that India is being unreasonable with the import duties. And India thinks the U.S. doesn't really understand our needs.
The whole deal is a lot less juvenile than it sounds, we promise. And if you want to know all the details, you can check our article right here.
Why is Japan teetering on the edge of a recession?
On Wednesday, we turned our attention to Japan's economic woes. In the last quarter of 2019, Japan’s economy contracted by 6.3% compared to the quarter last year, sparking fears of a recession. And while the country is currently grappling with a host of issues, including a sales tax hike, a super typhoon and Coronavirus, Japan's problems started a long time ago.
Here's everything you need to know about Japan's economic fallibility.
The Search for Safe Havens
On Thursday, we talked about the flight of money in search of safe havens. Coronavirus is wreaking havoc everywhere and investors are trying to insulate their portfolios by parking money in assets that are generally deemed safe. But what are these assets and where do you find them? Not to worry. We've helpfully listed them down here.
